RONAN – Brooke Jackson, 12, still wasn’t ready to show her heifer in the Lake County Fair on Friday evening after months of hard work. For the past year, she took the heifer on nightly walks, fed her high- quality food and gave her a bath – but there was more to do.
During the fair, the primping began. It started with another bath behind the arena. She lathered up the animal with soap and hosed her off until the water ran clean. The comb came out next and the animal’s hair was shaped. Then the blow-drying process began. Several other animals were also getting the salon-style treatment before the show.
Megan Evelo, 15, was working on making the end of her cow’s tail look like a teardrop, which is done by teasing the hair into a ball and using hairspray to hold it in place. She continued to fluff the hair up and add more hairspray until it looked just right.
“We do this so they will look nice for the show,” she said. “Showing cows is my favorite part of the fair. It’s my passion. It’s about confidence and showing all the hard work you’ve done. I really love it.”
Sadler McCollum, 11, was in the process of blow-drying his heifer when he said that he didn’t really enjoy the fluffing up process. “I wouldn’t say I like it but that is what I have to do for the show, and I really like showing. I like everyone looking at the her.”
Halle McVicker, 16, was also blow-drying her steer. She said 4-H teaches participants about respect, hard work and dedication. “It also teaches you about the circle of life and how that works,” she said.
The week-long fair was filled with projects from cake decorating to wood working projects along with the many fair animals. Grand and reserve champions for the 2019 Lake County Fair are listed below.
