PABLO —Rhiley Big Beaver, a fifth-grader at Dayton Elementary, won the Confederated Salish and Kootenai tribes’ annual holiday card-decorating contest. This year’s contest featured the creations of students from smaller schools in the area.

Penny Kipp, department head of tribal education, said this year the tribes decided to invite children from schools in Dixon, Charlo, Valley View and Dayton to compete to grace the Confederated Salish and Kootenai tribal council’s holiday card. Students were asked to create a Native-themed Christmas card, which will be sent out to the governor and the White House, among other correspondents.

Kipp said the annual card contest has been around for more than 10 years.

“(It’s a great way) for kids to participate and be engaged,” Kipp said.

Big Beaver received a $25 gift certificate from Walmart and lunch with the tribal council, along with her family, in addition to 12 of the Christmas cards.
