POLSON – Folks are building an ice hockey rink by selling one $3 shaved ice treat at a time.

This past summer, siblings Zayne and Summer Newman, along with friends Max Violett and Corben Carlson, teamed up to operate a shaved-ice stand. They donated their proceeds to the building fund of the Mission Valley Ice Arena.

“I love playing hockey,” Summer said, who moved to Polson from Minnesota with her family. “We played a lot of hockey in Minnesota. We really wanted to help contribute to building a hockey rink here so we don’t have to drive anywhere to play.”

The group set up their shaved-ice stand along U.S. Highway 93 in front of the Oak’s Korean Kitchen with the goal of raising $500.

“My brother came up with the idea of making shaved ice because it was summertime,” Summer said.

On Thursday, after two months of selling shaved ice cones in the hot summer sun, the four entrepreneurs presented a $500 check from their proceeds to representatives of the Mission Valley Ice Arena Association.

“I was very impressed with the kids’ entrepreneurial spirit, as well as their willingness to work through their summer with such a noble goal in mind,” said MVIAA board member Hilary Lozar. “They are all very community-minded kids and are the poster kids for the ice arena’s efforts.”

The ice arena will provide year-round recreational and competitive activities for the benefit of the residents and visitors of all ages in a multi-functional facility that will encourage and promote the health, social and economic interests of the community, according to MVIAA.
