Prep basketball season kicks off with full slate of action

RONAN – The 2019-2020 prep basketball season is underway as boys and girls teams from Arlee, Charlo, Mission, Polson and Ronan hit the hardwood courts this past weekend at various tip-off tournaments throughout the state. The squads from Arlee and Charlo didn’t have to travel far: both schools opened their seasons Friday and Saturday during the Western C Tip-Off Tournament in Ronan. 

With back-to-back wins over the Granite Lady Prospectors and Lincoln Lady Lynx, the Charlo Lady Vikings wasted no time getting their season off to a good start. In Friday’s matchup against Granite, junior Carlee Fryberger paced Charlo with eight points in the 32-25 win.

Both Fryberger and Liev Smith scored a game-high 11 points for Charlo, making a combined total of half the Lady Vikings’ points in the 44-18 win over Lincoln on Saturday.

For the Charlo boys on Friday, Keaton Piedalue scored a team-high 11 points followed by Roper Edwards and Phil Marquez with ten points as the Vikings struggled and fell 66-43 to the Granite Prospectors. 

The Vikings had a much better showing Saturday as they defeated the Lincoln Lynx 62-40. Edwards scored a game-high 19 points, which included knocking down five three-pointers. Also for the Vikings, Dawson DuMont scored 14 points.

Under first year coach Zack Conko-Camel, the Arlee Warriors split their first two games of the season. The Warriors won on Friday, defeating the Seeley-Swan Blackhawks 52-46. Cody Tanner paced the Warriors with 18 points followed by Levi Fullerton with 16 points.

On Saturday, the Darby Tiger slipped past the Warriors 58-57. The Warriors were led by Fullerton who scored 22 points and Tanner who booked 20 points.

The Arlee Scarlets struggled in their first game of the season falling to the Seeley-Swan Lady Blackhawks 60-14, however, they bounced back on Saturday afternoon with a 38-32 win over the Darby Lady Tigers. 

Freshman Raven Parson scored a game-high eight points for the Scarlets.

Playing in the Western A Tip-Off Tournament, the boys and girls basketball teams from Polson and Ronan joined ten teams in Frenchtown Friday and Saturday. 

The Ronan Maidens started their 2019-2020 season by winning both of their games this weekend. The Maidens outlasted the Stevensville Lady Yellowjackets 47-45 on Friday and defeated Butte Central 34-30 on Saturday. Against Butte Central, Jaylea Lunceford scored a Maidens’ team-high 13 points. 

The Ronan Chiefs opened their season with a 24-point fourth quarter come from behind win on Friday to defeat the Stevensville Yellowjackets 63-54. Leonard Burke posted a game-high 22 points and Girma Detwiler had 20 points for Ronan.

In Saturday’s match up, The Chiefs stumbled 64-43 against the Butte Central Maroons. Detwiler score 11 points to lead the Chiefs.

The Polson Pirates split their tournament games in the Western A Tip-Off this weekend, falling 61-44 to the Dillon Beavers on Friday and picking up a 60-42 win on Saturday against the Glendive Red Devils.

Colton Graham led the Pirates with 18 points against Dillon and Anton Lefthand paced Polson with 11 points against Glendive.

On Friday, the Polson Lady Pirates fell 65-24 to the Dillon Lady Beavers and on Saturday, struggled against Glendive falling 64-23. Mossy Kouley was the top Lady Pirate scorer with 12 points in the game against Glendive.
