Editor,
Bravo and kudos to the Port Polson Players for presenting an uplifting, timeless play, “The Beggars’ Bounty,” to our community. With the darkest days of the year approaching, this heartfelt musical comedy offered respite and a message filled with light and hope.
The talented and large cast ranged in age from 4 to 72, with a passel of kids involved, many miles traveled and lots of hours spent in rehearsal. The play was inspired, written and staged by Karen and Neal Lewing, embodying the true spirit of community, ethics and strength of character.
Set in the 1936 holiday season, the themes ring true today: the corruption of money, corporate greed and power vs. the purity of love, generosity, and family. There was Delilah, a street bum, who asks the greedy company guy, “You think you’re wise? That people respect you? How much money does it take to buy happiness?”
There were the poor kids who agree, as “the future of our nation,” that they can make the world a better place by “sharing, caring, giving and loving.” And there was the wise four-year-old boy in rags surrounded by his street family who “gets it” when he yells, “We got it all!”
The magic of community theater continues to enrich our valley, thanks to the tireless efforts and talents of the Lewings and the Port Polson Players. Thank you all. I look forward to many more uplifting, entertaining shows.
