84th annual Cherry Growers’ meeting held

News from Flathead Lake Cherry Growers, Inc.

YELLOW BAY — The 84th annual cherry growers’ meeting will be on held Saturday, April 4, at the Yellow Bay Community Clubhouse, 23429 Montana Highway 35. Sponsored by Flathead Lake Cherry Growers, Inc., a Montana agricultural cooperative, the meeting is open to anyone with an interest in cherry farming. Doors open at 8:30 a.m.; the meeting begins at 9 a.m.

Due to limited seating, advance registration is recommended. General admission is $25 per person and includes morning refreshments and lunch. Speakers include Dr. Ines Hanrahan and Mark Hanrahan, both highly respected in Washington State for their expertise in the research and development of cherry varieties and innovative practices of horticultural systems. Topics will bring attendees up to date on the latest horticultural developments for a productive and healthy orchard.

Also on the agenda will be Dr. Jerry Bromenshenk, apiculture specialist. Nationally known for his bee research, including “Colony Collapse Disorder,” Dr. Bromenshenk’s topics will include current honeybee research and management, and how these affect the cherry industry.

Brian Campbell, local fieldman for Monson Fruit Company, will lead a tour and on-sight discussion of three local orchards on Friday, April 3. Growers registered for Saturday’s meeting are invited to attend the tour. Meet at the Yellow Bay Clubhouse at 3 p.m. to caravan or carpool.  Campbell will review the tour at Saturday’s meeting. 

The Saturday agenda will also include several topics and announcements of general interest to all local cherry growers.
