Mariners, Lakers split doubleheader
POLSON – The Mission Valley Mariners and Kalispell Lakers split a doubleheader on the baseball diamond Wednesday night during conference A Legion baseball action at O’Malley Park in Polson.
The Mariners dropped the first game, 4-0; however, in the nightcap, the Mariners’ bats exploded for five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for a 7-2 victory.
In the first game, the Lakers scored once in the third inning and pushed three runners across the plate in the sixth inning for a 4-0 shutout win.
The Lakers’ pitching staff held the Mariners to just four hits, while Mariner pitcher Alex Muzquiz pitched six innings, allowing four runs on seven hits.
Muzquiz faced 28 batters, striking out three and walking one, and Ethan McCauley faced three batters in seventh-inning relief for the Mariners.
With neither team scoring in the first two innings of the second game, the Mariners broke the stalemate in the bottom of the third as Trevor Lake and Ethan McCauley both crossed the plate to put the Mariners up 2-0.
The Lakers responded with a pair of runs on three hits in the fourth inning, knotting the game up at 2-2.
After a scoreless fifth, the Mariners broke the game open, scoring five runs on five hits to set the game final 7-2.
Mariner Xavier Fisher was the winning pitcher, giving up two runs on nine hits over six innings. Fisher had no walks and struck out five Lakers batters. Striking out two of the four batters he faced, pitcher Eric Dolence finished the game in the seventh inning for the Mariners.
McCauley and Lake provided the big bats for the Mariners at the plate. Lake’s bases were loaded in the bottom of the sixth, pushing the winning run across the plate for the Mariners, while McCauley, in the same inning, scored two runs on a double.
On the night, McCauley went 1-for-2 with a double and two RBIs. Lake finished 2-for-3 in the game with two singles and an RBI.
The Mariners continue their nine-game homestand Wednesday, July 8, in a conference doubleheader matchup when they take on the Bitterroot Bucs followed by a Tuesday, July 14, conference doubleheader against the Libby Loggers. Both games are scheduled for a 5 p.m. start.
