POLSON – Skateboarders from across western Montana were in Polson this past weekend to enjoy the 23rd Annual Skate Jam at the Seventh Avenue Skate Park.
“It’s super vertical. I love it,” said Bitterroot Valley skater Tyson Hawkinson of the park’s layout.
Jesse Vargas and Loni Havlovick, event organizers, were hoping for a strong turnout, and they were rewarded by more than 100 attendees with skaters of all ages and skill levels. Most skaters were looking for the opportunity to show off their best skills, while others wanted to hang out.
The entire afternoon of skating was free for all participants and had different tiers of skaters competing for prizes depending on their age as well as free-for-all skate sessions. Along with skateboarding, there was food available, provided by local food truck vendors, and live music from the Polson band Hellcat Maggie.
Saturday’s Skate Jam event is one of many ways the Seventh Avenue Skate Park is raising money to fund its current $220,000 expansion project. The proposed expansion will merge seamlessly with the original park design and create a wide variety of options for all styles, ages and skill levels. By adding new obstacles like pyramids, rails, ledges, boxes and steps, the expansion will provide riders an opportunity to advance while doubling the size of the existing 12,000-square-foot park.
