POLSON – The 21st annual combined Ronan / Polson Choral Concert will be held at 7 p.m. in the PHS Auditorium on Tuesday, March 1.
“This has been one of the best cooperative events held between Ronan and Polson for our students” Polson Choral Director Chris Bumgarner said. “Both Cathy and I have benefited immensely from this collaborative effort and our schools are able to put aside the competitiveness and work toward a common goal. Cathy is such a good friend and that friendship has encouraged students to form lifelong connections in our two schools.”
The Ronan High School choirs, directed by Cathy Gillhouse, will feature their Select and Concert Choirs as well as the Girls Ensemble and the Show Choir. Polson High School will have their Mixed Choir, Select Girls Choir, Concert Choir as well as Connection perform. Both schools will have combined choirs share several numbers together.
The Ronan choirs will be joined by the Mission Valley Choral Ensemble and will share a fun gospel piece. RHS choral assistant Wendy Sanders will accompany the Ronan choirs.
The Polson High School choirs will be accompanied by a percussion group for a song entitled “Jai Ho,” from the movie “Slumdog Millionaire.” Kim Sheesley and Anna Dupuis will also play strings with the Polson choirs on a piece entitled, “Oh My Luve’s Like A Red, Red Rose.” Mrs. Karla Gallatin will accompany the Polson Choirs on piano. Another special number will be “A Boy and a Girl” an a cappella piece that uses unusual harmonies to create an amazing mood for the audience to enjoy.
Songs from around the world will be performed. Languages sung will include: German, Italian, Zulu, Hindi, Spanish and English. This year’s concert will also feature a piece directed by Ruth Reneau, a student teacher at Ronan High School. Ruth is a graduate of Polson High School. Cathy Gillhouse will direct the final piece called Echo Song and the senior choir members will be featured as all the choir students will perform together.
Admission will be by donation only with the proceeds split between the schools to help pay for music festivals, meals and the Show Choir trip. Everyone is invited to come and enjoy a great evening of music. You don’t want to miss this one.
"I decided to really challenge my students this year and we are doing music that is more difficult than previous years. They have responded well and have worked hard to create the sound that each composer was searching for...especially for ‘Boy and A Girl.’ This piece, by modern composer Eric Whitacre, creates a mood by using very close harmonies and silence. It's probably a college level piece but Concert Choir wanted to perform it and I am so pleased with their effort. The audience will be deeply affected by this and other songs performed,” Bumgarner said.
