Overwhelmed: that’s how both Life Savers Animal Rescue and Mission Valley Animal Shelter volunteers are feeling with their current over-abundance of furry, four-legged felines. With both shelters now turning away most cats due to a lack of space, the groups are offering a heck of a deal to combat the large population of felines in the Mission Valley. Both Life Savers and Mission Valley Animal Shelter will fix adult cats and kittens for only $5 through Dec. 31. The organizations will cover remaining costs, which can be as much as $70 for a male cat and $90 for a female.

We’re overwhelmed with the number of cats and kittens coming in,” Vicki Scheidecker of Life Savers said. “We just had a spay and neuter clinic, but we’re still seeing so many cats and kittens come in that this is sort of our last-ditch effort.”

Scheidecker added that the large population of felines is more than just a local issue for the Mission Valley, as the entire state of Montana is seeing an increase as well.

“Almost every shelter in Montana has seen an overwhelming increase in cats and kittens in shelters,” Scheidecker said. “We can’t take anymore. Neither organization will euthanize a healthy animal just because there is no space; we have to turn them away.”
