Farmers market begins in Polson, others to follow

LAKE COUNTY — The farmers market season picked up in Polson on Friday with a thriving second event as other markets get ready to kick off. The Polson market is held every Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Third Avenue West, in front of the Cove Deli.
Linda Sheridan, Polson market spokesperson, reported that due to weather, the first market wasn't as well attended. “Last week, the weather was pretty cold so not as many people came out. This week, it’s just beautiful out.”
Blue skies and comfortable spring temperatures, drew more shoppers the second week. Home On the Range Pies set up at the market again this year with a selection of treats and 12 years of market attendance behind them.
Home on the Range Pies owner Rusty Carl summed up what a farmers market is really about. “You know, it’s an opportunity for people to get together," he said. "It’s not a rush, rush. We spend more time telling stories than we do selling pies."
Each booth at the market was set up with something special. The Lifesavers Animal Rescue booth brought their foster puppy for everyone to see and give plenty of attention to. Handmade knives were on display at another booth. The selection was focused more on crafts as many of the vegetables are still growing out in the gardens, but many market vendors said they plan to add vegetables and flowers later in the growing season.
Danielle Lincoln Hanna was set up at another booth with her books from the MailBoat Suspense Series, which offers interesting stories about steamboats on a lake in Wisconsin. The boats were used to deliver mail to the houses on the lake.
The Polson Farmers market is one of many markets across the valley. The Mission Falls Market, in St. Ignatius, starts on Friday, June 4, at the Good Old Day’s park from 5 to 7 p.m. The Ronan Farmers Market at the Ronan Visitor’s Center on U.S. Highway 93 starts their season on Thursday, May 20, from 4-7 p.m.
