FLORENCE — It wasn’t quite the finish the Mission-Arlee-Charlo (MAC) softball team had hoped for, but it’s one the program will never forget. The team fell 10-4 to the Florence Lady Falcons at the Class B/C state tournament championship game held in Florence on Saturday.
In the opening round on Thursday, MAC faced the Huntly Project Lady Red Devils and used late seventh-inning heroics to come away with a 7-6 win. Izzy Evans hit a game-winning grand slam home run in the bottom half of the seventh inning when the team was down 6-3.
During Friday’s match against the Stillwater Lady Renegades, MAC was tied 5-5 through the first five innings. MAC came away with a narrow 6-5 win off a solo home run by Kooper Page. The win set up a semifinal showdown with the Florence Lady Falcons.
Facing Florence, MAC came up short falling 12-5. MAC bats scored five runs on 10 hits. After dropping into the loser’s bracket Saturday morning and looking to keep their championship hopes alive, MAC bounced into the state title game with a 13-2 rout over Stillwater. Both Evans and Jerny Crawford hit home runs as MAC collected 13 runs on 14 hits.
In the Championship game Saturday afternoon, MAC faced their nemesis Florence for the second time in the state tournament and sixth time overall this season.
MAC jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, however, a six-run fourth inning by Florence seemed to seal the deal for the Lady Falcons as they went on to win 10-4.
“I am super proud of these girls because they never quit, had a lot of heart, kept fighting,” said MAC head coach Shane Reum after the game.
MAC wraps up their season with a Class B/C State runner-up trophy and an overall season record of 22-5-1.
