POLSON — After seven years of fundraising and over a month and a half of construction, the long-awaited 6,100-square-foot revamped Seventh Avenue Skatepark was ready for fun on Saturday.

“This is great. I love it,” said Missoulian skater Tucker Cabell.

Cabell was one of about 50 skaters who were rolling, grinding and launching off the rails, ramps and bowls of the freshly-rebuilt skate park during grand reopening celebrations held during Saturday’s 24th Annual Skate Jam.

Mission Valley resident and professional skateboarder Bradley Pichler was on hand for the event. “There is all this new terrain. It’s awesome,” he said.

Pichler, Cabell and other skaters at the park praised the park’s layout, which allowed riders to take multiple routes and cut down on collisions. Beginners could stick to the rails and flatter sections on the outside, while more skilled skaters could plunge down the steep sides of the pool bowl to catch some serious hang-time.

Jesse Vargas, who has been spearheading the fundraising efforts for the additional park features, said he is confident the new addition to both the north and west sides of the park will help novice riders improve their skills and the more advanced boarders up their game.

While Saturday’s skate jam was a celebration of a completed goal, it also served as the first fundraiser event for the third and final expansion stage of the park, which is slated for completion next summer. “We’ll be pushing each edge out 20 feet and creating a circuit where all features seamlessly blend,” said Vargas.
