POLSON — A St. Ignatius man was sentenced to six months in jail with all but 40 days suspended for misdemeanor DUI.

Stephen John Walters, 35, was initially facing an additional charge of felony criminal endangerment, but that charge was dismissed as part of a plea agreement.

According to court records, on March 16, authorities responded to a report of a Dodge Ram that had gone into a pond after rear-ending a Mazda at a high rate of speed. Walters was identified as the driver of the Dodge. He immediately took responsibility for causing the crash that totaled the Mazda. Remarkably, no occupants of the Mazda were injured. Walters allegedly refused a breath test, field sobriety tests or to speak with responding law enforcement without an attorney present. Walters’ insurance covered the cost of replacing the Mazda.

Judge Deborah “Kim” Christopher gave Walters credit for 30 days toward the 40 days jail time for time spent in chemical dependency treatment.
