ST. IGNATIUS — Ron and LaVonne Olmstead remember when the Christmas tree lighting first started in Mission, the now 40-foot tree stood about half its size. But over the years the green boughs have grown along with the small event’s popularity.

“Once you start this kind of event, the families (enjoy it) and continue to come back each year,” said LaVonne as she and her husband set out plates of cookies, canisters full of hot chocolate and a pot of chili.

The Christmas tree lighting, sponsored by the St. Ignatius Chamber of Commerce, was also accompanied by the seventh annual Christmas carnival and the second annual parade of lights. The event is intended to bring out area families to enjoy the holiday season together.

As light-strung trucks adorned with illuminated Santas and snowmen started to line up along the street, the crowd began counting down the seconds until the tree glowed bright. Families sitting on hay bales on a flatbed, ready to ride throughout the town caroling, applauded as strand by strand flickered to life.

“They wanted to see the parade of lights,” MaryAnn Maestas of Pablo said as her grandchildren ran to see the shimmering floats.

“Look at all the little elves,” shouted Maestas’ grandchild, peering through the chain link fence of Gariepy Park.

“It’s fun for the kids, good childhood memories,” Maestas smiled. “I’m cold, but they are having fun; they are so excited.”

“It’s awesome,” said Mission resident Rose Mansell of the entire event, as she sat on the float filled with carolers. “I love Christmas. It’s good to get the community together.”
