ARLEE — The Arlee Warriors lost a heartbreaker to the Drummond Trojans 28-22. The Warriors defense started out strong with Brady Potts getting his hands on a Drummond pass on the 24-yard line. This resulted in an eight-yard run by Zack Tameler to put the Warriors on top 8-0 after the two-point conversion by Christian Haynes.

In the second quarter Drummond scored a touchdown on a 14 yard run to make the score 8-6. With 4:38 left in the second quarter Clayton Trimble jumped on a Drummond fumble to put the Warriors on the 15-yard line. After inching a few yards closer to the end zone, the Trojans were called for off sides, and the Warriors were moved from the eight-yard line to the four-yard line. However, the Warriors couldn’t get the ball into the red zone and Drummond’s Ben Lyons picked off the potential touchdown pass. Drummond went on to score another touchdown to put the Trojans up 12-8. With 4.9 seconds left in the first half, a pass intended for Christian Haynes was intercepted by Drummond’s Joe Mannix. The Trojans almost scored another touchdown to end the half but the pass was incomplete to keep the halftime score 12-8.

In the third quarter, the Warriors moved their way up the field with yardage from Lane Wilson and Tameler. Drummond was called for a penalty, which resulted in a first down for the Warriors. Despite a 20-yard pass from senior Cody Sheridan to Haynes, Drummond took over on the 15-yard line with 4:46 left in the third quarter. The Warrior defense then went to work keeping the Trojans from scoring in the third. Potts and Trimble sacked quarterback Mac Bignell for a loss of two on the play at 2:52 to end the third quarter 12-8.

In the fourth quarter the Trojans found a hole in the Arlee defense when Darius Pool jumped over Warrior defenders to score the third Trojan touchdown. Then Drummond scored the extra two points to put them up 20-8 with 11:53 left in the fourth. The Warriors had a chance to score a touchdown when a long pass was made to Haynes, but the ball bounced in and out of his possession. But this didn’t discourage the Warrior offense, as Tameler broke free from Trojan defense to make a 29-yard gain.

Tameler then finished up by running in a five-yard touchdown to put the Warriors back in the game 20-14. Haynes ran in the extra point and the Warriors were within reach at 20-16.

But the Trojans’ Pool found a way to score again with a touchdown and extra point, 28-16. Again Tameler answered, with another touchdown, a 26-yard run, to make the score 22-28. The Warriors battled all the way to the end and with 1:20 left in the fourth quarter, Haynes caught the ball for a 40-yard gain. With 38.3 seconds left the Warriors were on the 15-yard line Haynes broke free in the corner but the potential touchdown and overtime catch was batted away by Drummond’s Bignell.

“This loss hurts,” Head Coach Mike Rogers said. “We came to play. We had a game plan and that was to take it to them. I couldn’t be any prouder, they left it all on the field.”

Rogers praised Potts and Trimble for their defense and said his players made very few mistakes in the game.

“Passing, defense…we did it all,” Rogers said. “We just came up short.”
