RONAN — With 15 teams (Arlee, Big Sky, Bigfork, Columbia Falls, Eureka, Flathead, Hamilton, Hellgate, Plains, Polson, Ronan, St. Ignatius, Whitefish, Anaconda and Thompson Falls) bringing nearly 500 runners to the Ronan Invitational cross-country meet Saturday, the Chiefs and Maidens had plenty of competition. The Ronan girls’ team finished eighth, while the boys were 10th.

Zach Wagner and Payton Adams led the boys, turning in season-best times.

“These two boys worked together throughout the race, proving to be a huge boost for them mentally; they understand they need to be close to one another throughout the race,” head coach Noelle Decker said. “They both ran stronger (Saturday) than I have ever seen them and I think that they are starting to understand the strategies of this race.”

After running a great race three days prior at the King Ranch Invitational in Frenchtown, Danny Romero was disappointed when he was slowed by an asthma attack Saturday.

“He tends to be pretty hard on himself but those things can’t be avoided and I have no doubt he will bounce right back,” Decker noted.

Rhett Duffey was the team’s biggest boost at their home meet, Decker said.

“He ran the race of his life, turning in a time of 19:29, bettering his time by almost a minute from Wednesday’s meet in Frenchtown and moving into our top five boys.”

On the girls’ side, Jacey Probst and Kiana Howell continue to lead, Decker noted.

“They have both been consistently improving each race and know their roles,” she explained. “They are both capable of running in high 20s to low 21s, but getting them to be uncomfortable and realize they can work through it is the key. They haven’t even begun to tap into that area thus far, but that is my goal for them come time for state.”

Ronan travels to Thompson Falls for a meet on Thursday.
