POLSON — 4-H members from across the state of Montana recently competed for four spots on the Montana State 4-H Shotgun Team at a competition held at Big Sky Sporting Clays in Polson. The top four competitors from this competition earned the privilege of competing at the National 4-H Shooting Sports event to be held in Grand Island, Neb., next June. The members competed in three different events, trap, five-stand and sporting clays, with the overall combined score from all events being used to determine the top four. Fifty shots were made in each event. Lake County members competing during the day were Cody Grant, Rafe Fangsrud and Samuel Cates.
The four qualifiers were Cody Grant (Lake County) who shot a 114, Wesley Mack with a score of 100 (Lewis and Clark county), Shannara McDunn (Lewis and Clark County) with a 100; and Rex Chapman (Lewis and Clark County) with a 94. Alternates selected were Shawn Skartved from Toole County and Rex Chapman from Lewis and Clark County. Samuel Cates (Lake County) won the junior member competition (ages 9 to 13) with a score of 76.
Thanks to Lake County 4-H Shooting Sports leaders Fred Grant, Sam Cates, Les Mutchler and Frank and Angie Mock for their help with this tournament. Special thanks also to Ken Neuwgard, who ran the trap range during the competition, and to Rick and Terry Van Voast for all their support and making sure everything ran so smoothly.
