FRENCHTOWN — The Polson Pirate cross-country team had some great races Saturday at the Northwest A Conference Championship at the King Ranch Golf Course in Frenchtown.

“The Pirate girls successfully defended their Northwest A title in another very close battle with Columbia Falls,” coach Matt Seeley said.

Claudia Hewston led the way with a strong sub-19 win, and the next three Lady Pirates (Sandra Crossett, Tegan Bauer, and Hallie Hovenkotter) finished right together, all breaking 20 minutes for the first time. Amanda Stobie rounded out the scoring for Polson with 16th place and a lifetime best of 20:28.

“The race went back and forth throughout, and it was great to see our girls working together for such an incredible team effort,” Seeley said. “(Hewston) ran one of the best times in the state this year, and every other girl, including the JV runners, had a season-best time. Hopefully the team can carry this momentum into the state meet next Saturday.”

The Pirate boys finished second in the team race, with senior Travis Hayes leading the way in fourth place overall. Tel Motichka crossed second for Polson and ran just fast enough to earn all-conference honors in 10th place.

“Both (Hayes and Motichka) rose to the occasion with lifetime best times,” Seeley noted. “It is great to see these kids running great at the end of the year as a reward for all of their hard work and dedication.”

Chaz Brewer also had his best race ever to cross the line third for Polson and 13th overall. Jimmy Bjorge and Jared Rubel rounded out the top five scoring for Polson.
