Student saves choking friend at lunch

A Kicking Horse Job Corps student put her training to work and saved a fellow student from choking on Oct. 22.
Sierra White, a CNA and medical assisting student at Kicking Horse Job Corps Center, came to the rescue for a choking victim, Martin Gamez. Martin, a diesel mechanics student, and his friends sat down to eat lunch and Martin began choking on a piece of meat.
At first, Martin began coughing, but then realized he could not breathe. He was barely able to state that he thought he was choking. One of his friends tried to help him, but was unsuccessful. Martin remembered feeling scared he was going to pass out. Then his friend Sierra stood up and began initiating the American Red Cross training she had received on center. She performed “back blows” to Martin, and the food finally dislodged. At first, Sierra was scared Martin was going to die but was relieved that she was able to help him.
