Tribal members still in the dark

Editor,

After seeing how tribal members were left in the dark about the tribal settlement money, there has to be something done so that we are all made aware of our Tribal Council’s decisions. It’s time for us off-reservation members to be represented as a group. What is the quota of us per the total membership? We should have a councilman or two who we vote in as our voice. This is 2012, and with the Internet, we can all be instantly informed as to tribal business. We should be kept in the know before decisions are made.

It’s time to join the present decade and update and reorganize the way our tribal government operates. Personally, I find it absurd that 10 tribal councilmen get to decide everything for us without more tribal member input. There has to be some recourse to this situation.

Issues I have with past and present council members:

1. Buying up a whole lot of land to add to the reservation. Let’s concentrate on helping all our tribal members improve their lives first. Giving help where it’s needed should be our priority. Together, we can get this right.

2. You’ve added other Indian blood to our enrollment at a fast pace. To me, this is like giving away our assets. Case in point, the tribal settlement money, also per capitas.

3. What will happen when Kerr Dam is paid for? The revenue from power sales will come to the tribes. What will happen to that money? We are again like mushrooms (kept in the dark.)

I would like comments from other tribal members. Please feel free to call me at my home phone: (541) 784-9177.
