Nkwusm has had a very busy academic fall quarter. Enrollment has reached 36 students in our pre-kindergarten through eighth-grade classes. This is the largest number of students we have seen in recent years. Testing has been provided to Nkwusm students to determine benchmarks for Salish, reading and math. Students will re-test in these subjects this winter to determine progress and intervention. We continue to provide many cultural excursions and the ever-present Salish language instruction. We see our students using their Salish language in everyday situations.

While our student population continues to increase we have seen a budget that has decreased. This is the result of grants running their course and concluding during a time of federal fiscal crisis, meaning there are not any grant funds available to take the place of expiring grants. Nkwusm has come to rely more heavily on local contributions. As you may have noticed, we are sharing our successes, and minor setbacks, with the public as we ask them to assist us in our mission. We have opened our doors and provide tours of our facility twice a month; plus we schedule special tours for groups that have particular interest in what we are doing,

In this season of giving, we ask that you consider the children of Nkwusm and our mission to revitalize and perpetuate the Salish language and the Pend d’Oreille and Salish culture. There are many ways to give: one-time cash donations, pledge a certain amount each year for multiple years, payroll deductions through your employer, donations of time (volunteerism), or donation of products that Nkwusm students could use, or that the facility could use.

Please contact us at (406) 726-5050, or Nkwusm Salish Language Revitalization Institute, P.O. Box 5, Arlee, MT 59821. Please label with attention “Ululim Team.” Lem lemt’s, and Nkwusm wishes you the happiest of holidays.
