Once again the snow season is upon us, and we would like to remind Polson residents of the policies and ordinances that exist regarding snow removal from city streets and public sidewalks.  There is currently a snow removal policy for the city streets that outlines three tiers of priority. This priority schedule is available on the city’s home page at www.cityofpolson.com. To ensure efficient removal of snow, please make sure that garbage cans or other items such as basketball hoops are not in the street. Those items left in the street may be plowed over. Vehicles that are parked on the street will be plowed around. If possible please park your vehicle off the street; it will make the plowing job easier and more efficient for the street crew.

City ordinance No. 569 requests that snow not be plowed, pushed or otherwise placed in the street from private property. Snow accumulations on public sidewalks may be shoveled into the gutter directly contiguous to the sidewalk.

City ordinance No. 592 requires that property owners who have property that abuts or adjoins a public sidewalk must immediately remove any accumulations of snow and/or ice from the sidewalk.  Please make arrangements to have the sidewalk cleared of snow and/or ice as needed. If the city crews are called to clear the snow and/or ice, it will be a minimum of $25 plus actual time for snow/ice removal beyond one-half hour at the rate of $50 per hour. In addition, there is a $35 administration fee. The city will send an invoice for services rendered to the property owner. If the amount is not paid, the city can sue for collection and/or place the amount on the real estate tax collection, which then becomes a lien on the property.

Senior citizens and others who are unable to shovel their walks can call City Hall at (406) 883-8200. The city maintains a list of service organizations and individuals that will take care of shoveling sidewalks.
