The Polson Pirates fell in two hard-fought losses before the holiday break, dropping a Northwest A conference game to the Frenchtown Broncs Dec. 20, 50-48, and losing a tight contest against Mission Valley rivals the Ronan Chiefs Dec. 21, 29-28.

Against the Broncs, Cedric Smith led Polson with 13 points, and Riley Sampson wasn’t far behind with 10. Sampson had 10 rebounds; Smith eight; and Hayden Congdon added five. Will Davey and Chris McDonald had two steals apiece.

On Dec. 21, the Ronan Chiefs started hot, outscoring Polson 11-4 in the first quarter and building to a 18-13 lead at halftime. The Pirates came back stronger in the second half, keeping scoring at six points per team in the third quarter and outscoring the Chiefs 9-5 in the final frame. But the late effort wasn’t enough, and Ronan squeaked out a 29-28 victory.

Smith led his team with six points, just ahead of Congdon with five and Sampson and McDonald with four apiece. Sampson came away with nine rebounds, and Davey grabbed seven, as well as two steals and a block.

The Pirates host Loyola Saturday, with games starting at 4 p.m.
