Each year, the Salish and Kootenai Housing Authority sponsors two high school basketball teams (10 girls and 10 boys) to participate in the AMERIND All West Native American Basketball Classic in Lakewood, Colo. This year the event has been scheduled for April 5–7.

Scholarship

The Mark K. Ulmer Memorial Native American Scholarship Foundation offers a four-year $4,000 scholarship, paid at $1,000 per year, to high school seniors participating in the event.

To be eligible you must: 1) be a high school senior in 2013;  2) apply for the scholarship by Feb. 1; 3) play in the All West Native American Basketball Classic; 4) be involved in tribal and community affairs; 5)  keep a required grade point average.

With the deadline fast approaching, high school seniors planning on being involved in the event are encouraged to visit the website at www.markulmerscholarship.org to download an application. The website also offers instructions on how to complete all forms.

In our search to find committed, outstanding individuals, the team selection process has changed. Rather than holding a two-day tryout, coaches Zach Camel, JR Camel, Juan Perez and Silas Perez will be having light workout sessions focusing on basketball fundamentals. No strenuous activity will take place, as the coaches respect the need to keep players safe during the high school basketball season.

Athlete requirements

Any student interested in the 2013 Salish and Kootenai All-Star teams must meet the following requirements: 1) be high school age (cannot be over 19); 2) currently enrolled in high school; 3) be an enrolled tribal member or have parent(s) who are enrolled; 4) must have commitment and desire to achieve; 5) must attend workout sessions; 6) must be drug-free.

The light workout sessions will begin on Sunday, Jan. 13, at the Salish Kootenai College Joe McDonald Health and Fitness Center.  The boys’ session will begin at noon and the girls’ session is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.

Final team selection has been set for March 10, with applications and drug screening planned for March 17.
