ST. IGNATIUS — A 71-year-old hiker fell 300 feet from the Garden Wall at Mission Dam Reservoir Recreation area and was killed at about 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 1.
The man, an experienced hiker, and family members were about two and a half hours into the hike when he fell. Lake County Search and Research, Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribal Division of Fire, Tribal Police, Tribal Fish and Game, Lake County Sheriff’s Office and the St. Ignatius Fire Department responded and worked until 2 a.m. Sunday to free the man’s body, according to LCSO public information officer Karen Sargeant.
Workers hacked their way uphill through at least 300 yards of deadfalls, downed timber and brush to reach the trail. The man’s name has not been released.
