POLSON — At the Jan. 21 school board meetings, school nurses Millie Nesladek and Amy Knutson spoke to the trustees about their monthly report of sick students. They also discussed whooping cough and the flu and what the nurses are doing to prevent the diseases. In an effort to get kids to wash their hands, containers of non-alcohol hand sanitizer is located throughout the schools. The nurses also have a wellness program, trying to prevent illness rather than curing.

The trustees will be evaluation Superintendent Linda Reksten. They will receive a copy of the evaluation form on Feb. 11 and return it to Chair Caryl Cox on Feb. 25. The format will look at Reksten’s job description, the five criteria the board set up as priorities during the hiring process, Reksten’s goals and her progress on those goals.

The board continued through the policy manual, approving some policies and starting with a first reading on others. Policy 1610, regarding annual goals and objectives, was tabled so a timeline could be established.

In other business, trustees admitted one out-of-district student, accepted one student for early graduation and approved the consent agenda, which includes payroll, claims, travel request and activity fund reports.

A new travel bus was approved after much discussion, some about rebuilding the old bus. The bus will cost approximately $148,000 to $150,000 and will delivered in about 120 days, according to Transportation Director Mike Anderson, who said the old bus was at the end of its useful life.

“We (the school district) want to get our students there in a safe and reliable manner.”

As with the old bus, the new bus will have nicer seats, but will be white instead of yellow. It will have the standard DVD system, better windows plus automatic drop chains, which drop down in case of snowy roads, Anderson said.

The next school board meeting will be held on Feb. 11 at 5:30 p.m. in the district conference room.
