Editor,

I see our Lake County sheriff has notified the feds that he will not cooperate in the enforcement of any “unconstitutional” federal gun laws. Other sheriffs are taking a similar position. I think that they have every right to do so. It is an axiom of law that one jurisdiction may not enforce the criminal laws of another jurisdiction.

However, I see that at least the Powell County sheriff has gone further. He has put the feds on notice that he will not “permit” federal offices to enforce such laws within his jurisdiction. I hope he will provide prior public notice of any actual attempt to prevent federal agents from enforcing the law. I will pay big money to watch the show, as long as my seat is not in the line of fire. However, I would like to extend my anticipatory condolences to his family. If he is not shot dead in the encounter, he would soon be a long-term, unhappy resident of some federal prison.

It appears that these sheriffs did not receive a very good high school education in American history. In 1957, the Arkansas governor used his National Guard to prevent the enrollment of black kids in Little Rock High School as required by Supreme Court decision.  Eisenhower urged him to obey the law and use the guard to protect the black kids. Faubus just withdrew the guard, leaving the black kids to the tender mercy of the local residents. Eisenhower simply nationalized the guard and sent an additional 1,000 soldiers of the 101st Airborne to protect lawful U.S. citizens. Do the sheriffs really want the 101st knocking at their door?

But, of course, we all know that the sheriffs’ actions are really a grandstand, play-to-the-peanut-gallery show. Dictator Obama’s gun legislation will never make it through the Congress. The NRA, a much higher power than Obama or the Congress, will not permit it.
