Editor,

The waters in our Western Montana mountains flowing through our streams and rivers, the crystal-clear lakes and reservoirs all are gifts of God to our residents.

One cannot help but marvel at how our ranchers, farmers and other settlers, including our orchard owners, have taken advantage and developed this splendid natural resource we all revel in.

We have brought into being a utopia of the Swan, Flathead, Flathead Lake shoreline, the Mission, Jocko, Moiese, Missoula, Hellgate, Clark Fork and Bitterroot Valleys. We are now threatened with an action to seize and corral our water rights in all areas west of the Continental Divide in a proposal known as the Confederated Salish and Kootenai water compact. This compact, if adopted, can only be construed as an illegal grabbing of the irrigators’ existing legal use and control of this valuable natural resource by the tribe. Oppose it.
