POLSON — The Polson boys’ soccer team hosted Loyola and Hamilton last week, and while the Pirates beat Loyola 4-2, they couldn’t stop Hamilton from winning that match 2-1.

In the non-conference matchup with Loyola, Pirates Alex Helgeson and Jonah Kasnitz both did a great job of getting to the ball in front of the Loyola net and putting shots on frame, head coach Jess Kittle noted. Sam Heutmaker did a great job contributing in several different positions on the field, and Jacob Raymond played a very solid game on defense, Kittle added.

“We played better in this game than we did against Bigfork in our last game,” Kittle said. “We are still working on getting comfortable with some new positioning and new players, but it was a better outcome than our last game.”

Against Hamilton, another non-conference match, the Pirates improved their possession game, although Hamilton keeper Niall Clancy stopped several shots that nearly went in the net.

“We are still working on modifying our lineup but I feel like this was the best game we played so far this season,” Kittle said.

Morgan Moll scored Polson’s only goal when he got his head on the ball from a James Larson free kick. The ball from Larson, his third assist of the season, went right over the Hamilton defender and Moll moved to a perfect position to head it past the Hamilton keeper, Kittle said. Moll also had a diving header later in the game that almost found the back of the net, but the Hamilton keeper was able to get a hand on it.

“Steven Walk did a good job controlling our defense from the sweeper position and using his speed to cut down the angle of the Hamilton attack,” Kittle added.

The Pirates host Columbia Falls Thursday before heading to Whitefish Saturday.
