I wondered why the Valley Journal would give free advertising for Scientology (May 2, “Free Introductory Counseling”) just because it came in the form of a letter to the editor. However, perhaps this is a blessing, because exposure to the light of examination is one of the best ways to illuminate the what pseudoscience really is. Here now is an opportunity for readers to Google “Dianetics” and learn what L. Ron Hubbard promoted in 1950 as Scientology.
For more than 60 years, there have been many exposes of Scientology (Dianetics), but it seems that there is always enough of a new gullible public to keep the business alive. If you do Google “Dianetics” or “Church of Scientology” you will find many references describing it as a religious business operating on vague concepts with little or no scientific backing. Some countries have recognized the “Church of Scientology” as a religious organization; however, many refuse to do so. Canada does not. Psychologists routinely discredit Dianetics.
Educate yourself. Ask those who promote that first “free” counseling session what the costs are for additional sessions. Read up on the critical evaluations of Scientology. And, even better, expand your knowledge of some of the modern concepts of how the human brain functions. Gullibility is a most interesting human trait. The human mind is fantastic at self-deception.
