Editor,

It is ironic that the present Republican Party refers to itself as the party of Lincoln and Reagan. To quote Reagan from a speech of May 18, 1985, “Our tax system is complicated, unfair, cluttered with gobbledygook and loopholes designed for those with the power and influence to hire high-priced legal and tax advisors.” He recommended closing loopholes that benefit a privileged few. In that speech, he also recommended a graduated income tax that had a top bracket of 35 percent for those earning more than $70,000. That rate was more than double of those earning $29,000. In 1862, Lincoln signed the first graduated income tax, and that also had a higher bracket for those incomes that were comparable to a $250,000 income in today’s economy.
