Not only is Aja Starkey, Polson High School sophomore, fleet of foot for the Polson cross country and track teams, she also is a Nordic ski racer.
Aja competed in the United States Ski Association Cross Country Junior Nationals at the Soldier Hollow Cross Country Ski Resort in Utah during the week of March 5 through 10.
A member of the North Shore Nordic Team, based in Kalispell, Aja competed for the Pacific Northwest team and finished 31st in the 1.5K classic sprint.
“There are about 90 girls her age representing nine regions.” Bill Starkey, Aja’s dad said. “The competition was intense.”
Aja finished in the top 20 in the 5K J2, for racers with 1996 and 1997 birthdays. She also placed 15th in the 5K classic and anchored the 3K-relay team to a 6th place finish.
The top 20 individual performers earn All American honors, according to Bill. He added that Aja was immediately invited to a U.S. Olympic Committee training camp but declined because she had already missed a week of school.
