CHARLO – Poetry, scenic paintings and an oversized model of nachos and cheese made from paper were some of the creative works on display during the first ever Journey of Excellence event at Charlo High School May 24. By the end of the night, some 200 community members poured into the school to view samples of top notch student work and attend the choir’s spring concert. High school teacher Keith Grebetz headed the showcase.

The hallway in the activity center was completely covered with Charlo’s best student work of the year, on display for the rest of the school year. Exceptional writing and poetry covered the walls, while tables were filled with pottery, paintings, and drawings.

“This shows how extremely talented our students are here,” Grebetz said. “Our senior class has over $1 million in scholarships for college.”

One of those seniors is Spencer Shafter, who played guitar that evening for the audience. Shafter was recently accepted to New York University, where he plans to major in music technology. His mother Judy Shafter says his hard work in Business Professionals of America opened up many doors for her son.

“(BPA) was a big thing for him,” she said. “He got to travel for three years, which boosted his confidence.”

Grebetz anticipates the Journey of Excellence event will be even bigger in years to come, as he will add new features each year.

Some of the planned additions for next year’s event will include a technology display, along with the best PowerPoint presentations, drama skits, music solos and a yearbook preview.

Following the two-hour window to view the exhibit, the middle and high school choirs teamed up with the fifth grade, middle and high school bands to perform their annual spring concert. Music instructor Deb Nelson said she couldn’t be happier with her students’ performances.

“I’m pleased with how well they performed all year,” she said. “I hope they get even better next year.”

The concert featured a vocal duet from foreign exchange students Azharra Al-Farid, from Indonesia, and Andrea Wong, who hails from Malaysia.

Overall, it was a talent packed night for the Charlo community.
