Residents in the southern region of Lake County may have received an earlier wake up call than expected on the morning of May 10. At 3:40 a.m. a 3.1 magnitude earthquake was released below the Mission Valley fault at the base of the mountain range four miles east of Kicking Horse reservoir.

According to statistics recorded by the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology in Butte, people reported feeling the rumble from Pablo to Arlee, and as far west as Dixon. The intensity of the shake was minimal, with no reported damage sustained.

According to Michael Stickney, the director of Earthquake Studies in Butte, the quake occurred 23 kilometers beneath the surface, which he says is deep compared to most earthquakes in Northwestern Montana.

He says that earthquakes are never predicable, however, he doesn’t believe this is a foreshock for a larger event in the future, since the epicenter was so far from the fault.

“I don’t believe this earthquake is related to the actual fault line,” Stickney said.
