Each month Cherry Valley students learn a different virtue, and May’s virtue is service, according to Cherry Valley principal Elaine Meeks.
Service to our country is one of the highest levels of service, Meeks added.
First grade teacher Helen Siemers and Cherry Valley counselor Bill Starkey spearheaded the assembly.
A YouTube video of children singing “Thank You Soldiers” so moved Siemers that she taught the words to her first graders, who sang to the veterans who attended. Students also presented poppies and pictures they had drawn, many saying “Thank You” to the veterans.
The group of veterans included: Merle Parise, Don Abell, Joe Bushar, Jeff Nelson, Buck Baertsch, Dorothy Baertsch, Doug Wold, Mike Lozar, Juan Perez, Laura Burland, whose husband Shawn is in Iraq; Cynthia Hunter, whose twin sister Crystal is in Iraq; Mark Pluff, Cindy Dupuis, Larry Richards, Wes Targerson and Lloyd Irvine.
