POLSON — With warm temperatures and some sunshine, the construction team at Engineered Structures Inc. is in high gear at the new Polson Walmart Supercenter .

A long line of concrete blocks snakes up the hill west of the current Walmart, leading the eye to the site of the new building.

While excavators, dozers and cement trucks buzz around the area, local residents are interested in the activity.

One close resident, who lives west of the new Walmart Supercenter, said he understands that other business in town feel they might lose business, but he thinks the new Walmart can be good for the community.

“It’s not like (the construction) hasn’t caused some early mornings,” he added. “But progress is good.”

Polson Walmart manager Dan DeWitt said construction is right on schedule for a grand opening at the end of October.

Walmart will probably do some spring hiring, according to personnel manager Erin Melugin, but hiring for the new store won’t begin until August.

Probably 60 to 80 new people will be hired, Melugin and DeWitt agreed.

The square footage of the new store will be 125,000 feet, and the current store has 56,000 so the area will more than double. Most of that space will be taken up with fresh food and groceries, DeWitt said, although some of the other departments may get bigger.

Rumors aside, there is no official word on who may be purchasing the old Walmart store.
