POLSON — Spring is coming, and Polson Outdoor Equipment can help almost everybody get ready.

An offshoot of Western Building Supply and a brand new business, POE is located in the old Midway Rental building. The building sports new siding on the front, fresh paint and a clean, new look inside.

POE will sell lawn and garden items, grills and accessories, Husqvarna tractors and mowers, plus a selection of gifts, including Griz and Cat flags.

Since WBC is associated with DoItBest Rental Centers, Dave Ottun, one of the owners of WBC and manager of the Polson store, said the new business will also have a rental department as well as a complete parts and service department.

“We’ll have pretty good coverage on lawn equipment, including thatchers, aerators, leaf blowers, chainsaws and roto-tillers,” Ottun said.

For contractors and homebuilders, POE will rent roto-hammers, cement tools and many other items.

Rental items will be “stuff you could carry out in the back of your truck,” Ottun said.

The parts and service department can handle any small engine, such as lawn mowers.

“Also, we will have blade sharpening and chainsaw sharpening as well as building chains for chainsaws,” he added.

When Midway Rental left town last April, Ottun said he heard people complaining at WBC about no place to rent equipment.

Before purchasing merchandise, Ottun called Dan Weed, who previously owned and operated True Value Hardware in Polson to seek his advice. He asked Weed what some of his strongest sales areas were. Weed said lawn and garden items and grills.

Then Ottun recruited Weed to manage the business.

“Dan’s a familiar face and has rapport with the community and with customers,” Ottun added.

Ottun, Weed and the crew plan a soft opening for the first day of spring, March 20, with a grand opening on April 19.

Getting ready to open the business has been tough since the building had not been touched in 30 years. Ottun said he hauled away four 22-yard dumpsters full of junk. Now it’s cleared out, smells like new paint and has bright orange Husqvarnas on the floor.

“We just wanted to come to the market with a whole fresh new presentation,” Ottun said, adding that he’s still working on other parts of the building.

Beginning March 20, business hours will be 8 to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
