POLSON — Boy Scouts from Troop 1947 were pushing wheelbarrows piled high with straw, raking, sprinkling compost and peat moss and breaking up clumps of straw as they readied the community garden for the 2011 gardening season.
The scouts, parents, siblings and community members gathered after school on April 21 at the community garden in the field behind the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
They trundled wheelbarrow after wheelbarrow load of straw; Boy Scout Lindy Lambson said he could get a lot more straw with the wheelbarrow than just carrying it.
Using lasagne garden techniques, the soil was covered with layers of newspaper and watered down.
Then workers added a layer of blood meal and bone meal and then covered everything with a deep layer of straw.
Peat moss and organic compost went on top of the straw. After another watering, the beds were ready to plant.
Scoutmaster Cristi Buffington said it’s early for most plants, but the scouts might plant some cooler-weather plants like peas.
