Editor,

Growing concern from adults about underage drug and alcohol use within Lake County led the city to consider starting a youth center for the kids and teens of the area. While the cost of a youth center might be a huge financial burden on the city, it could have a significant impact on the kids and teens of the future. With this in mind, I believe that Lake County and its communities should consider building a youth center.

Kids and teens today are getting into more trouble as they are putting themselves into situations they should not be in. Many kids and teens are turning to gangs, drugs and alcohol to occupy their time, because they have nothing better to do. On weekends, many kids are out and often under the influence. If we want this to change, our community should come together and work on the construction of a youth center in Polson. A youth center would provide a central location for teens to come together to hang out or do various organized activities. With a youth center, the likelihood of kids and teens participating in more positive things will increase.

A youth center in Polson could also build strong partnerships with the city by creating some type of community service project that the kids and teens would be directly in charge of with the supervision and/or guidance of the members of the city council and supervisors of the youth center. Projects could range from a community-wide cleanup to volunteer and charity work around the city. This would not only benefit the city, but it would also help provide these kids and teens with a sense of responsibility and a greater understanding of their community.

By providing an environment that is fun and employing supervisors who are in tune with the kids and teens of today, the youth center could be easily welcomed by the kids and teens of the Lake County community.
