Editor,

The local road situation is a major problem for people’s safety and the condition of their vehicles. In Montana, constant thawing and freezing of moisture on the surface of the road causes cracks. Asphalt and other materials are porous, which means they absorb liquid. So as the liquids in the road surface thaw and freeze, the road eventually cracks more, forming potholes, which we all know so well on the rural roads of Montana. The amount of potholes that need to be repaired is uncountable; even the number of roads that need to be repaired is innumerable.

Some people would say there are no serious dangers to potholes. I disagree; there have been enough cases to prove that potholes can do serious damage to cars, which then puts people in danger. Addressing the waste of time issue; I also disagree. There are only around 143,000 workers to do the job nationwide; according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Montana only has 970 of the workers that are recorded nationwide. This is a low amount of people and it shows why and how our roads are terrible.

Take a look around sometime; notice all the potholes you dodge on your way to work. I think maintaining our local roads is a full-time job and we should definitely push to hire more for the job. Push our local government to employ the people it governs, the ones who need jobs, the desperate, and most of all, people who would do the job right.
