POLSON — “Oh, did you see that hippopotamus skull?”

“You get to shoot a bow and arrow over there.”

These were just a couple of comments from kids who attended the Youth Outdoor Fair from 5 to 9 p.m. upstairs at the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars on March 19.

Tom Fieber masterminded the event to benefit the Lake County 4-H Shooting Sports and the Boys Scouts. Fieber said the vendors did way more than expected and donated so many prizes for the smaller set to win.

Kids could play a hunting video game, learn to reload ammunition, sign up for the Ducks Unlimited Green Wing Program and the Pheasants Forever Ringnecks, talk to the Back Country Horsemen, take a look at Dick Schieke’s duck and goose decoy carving, munch a hotdog for dinner and marvel at all the skulls and predator pelts at the Alpine Artistry table.

About 150 people attended the fair, including 75 or 80 kids, Fieber added.

Youth could win prizes at individual booths, participate in the treasure hunt and buy raffle tickets for bigger items.

Ethan Buffington won the tent, which was the prize for treasure hunters.

All in all, everyone had a good time and Feiber said the first ever gathering raised about $3,000 for kids.
