CHARLO – Charlo School Board was down a trustee during their meeting March 17 as board member Dianna Kelly was in Spokane with her daughter, where she receives chemo treatment. School board member Dianna Kelly’s daughter, Wisteria Liberty-Dupuis, who attends Dixon Elementary, was diagnosed with leukemia in early February. The board agreed that Kelly is dismissed from trustee service as long as needed.

During regular business, the board approved to change a discrepancy in the wording of the head lice policy. The school has had an abnormal rise in cases this year, and it was discussed that if a student did get head lice they should be checked by the county health department, rather than just be out of school until it is believed that the lice and eggs are gone.

“We want the health department to come check them, and make sure it is reported,” superintendent Paul Jenkins said. “We need parents to know the proper way to take care of lice.”

Jenkins commented that communication with parents has already improved.

“We have sent letters home so parents know what to look for,” he said.

In other business, the board decided to hold off on hiring of fall coaches until their upcoming finance meeting is held.

During the superintendent’s report, Jenkins stated that at a recent math meet, to which Charlo sent 39 students, 28 receiving honors. Seven students were given a superior rating, also ranking in the top 15 percent of students who take the test. Fourteen students qualified for the state competition.

“We have some terrific students here, we really do,” he said.

Jenkins also commented that the school district’s budget is right where it should be for this point in the year.

The next Charlo School Board meeting will be held April 19.
