POLSON — On Friday, Feb. 11, seven students were involved in a drug bust at Polson High School. Responding law enforcement agencies included the Lake County Drug Task Force and Lake County Sheriff’s Office personnel.
Although the incident is still under investigation, the students were allegedly passing around prescription drugs obtained from at least one of the students' homes.
According to one of the student’s parents, who wishes to remain anonymous, the confiscated drugs included Methadone, Hydrocodone and Xanax.
The parent went on to say that what they had dismissed as normal teenage ups and downs had in fact been drug-induced mood swings.
“For every negative, there is a positive,” superintendent David Whitesell said. “Maybe it will take this (incident) to make people more aware of what’s in their medicine cabinet.”
Parents and grandparents, too, need to keep an eye on what’s in the medicine cabinet, Whitesell continued. It’s the same message U.S. Attorney General Eric J. Holder, Jr.’s office is issuing — “prescription drugs are a scourge.”
As far as consequences for the students, the school district will be following policy, and the student handbook say that if a student is found with drugs on campus, he or she can be suspended or expelled, depending on the severity of the action the student took.
