RONAN — The Super Bowl doesn’t usually conjure up images of people helping others, but the Ronan Seventh Day Adventist Church has found a way to make Super Bowl season about giving: the “Souper Bowl.”

For the second year, the church held a canned soup drive during January for the Ronan Bread Basket.

‘We do this by having a contest between the upstairs and downstairs (Sabbath classes),” church member Russ Jenkins explained.

The friendly competition wound up the day before Super Bowl Sunday and brought in quite a bit more soup than last year, Jenkins said. This year, the downstairs group won, and both groups combined for a grand total of 811 cans and packages of soup.

“It’s just wonderful, because we are feeding more families every month,” Break Basket chair Sherri McDonald said. “Every month, new families come in.”

In fact, the Bread Basket is already serving 20 more families than last year. All the soup will be a great help— not only is it the perfect winter meal, but it’s good for people of all ages and can be added to other foods, McDonald explained.

She said it’s important to note that, “all the food that comes in (to the Bread Basket) goes right out to the families.”
