CHARLO — In a brain-stretching day in Charlo, Polson students defeated Charlo, St. Ignatius and Ronan Academic Bowl teams last Wednesday, holding on to their early lead after the second meet of a series of four contests.
Polson finished with 490 points; Charlo had 388; St. Ignatius was a close third with 384 points; and Ronan came in fourth with 347. With those numbers added to the team scores from the first meet Jan. 12, Polson remains in first with 938 points; Charlo is second with 857; Mission third with 627; and Ronan fourth with 585. The teams will have a chance to change those standings at the next meet scheduled for March 30 in Polson.
The Academic Bowl in Lake County started around 20 years ago, Charlo coach Keith Grebetz said, as a fun, competitive way for seventh and eighth-graders from four local schools to test their knowledge in English, math, history, science and logic. After students take written tests in all five areas, the oral portion of the quiz bowl runs much like the TV game show “Jeopardy.” Teams made up of 10 students from each school earn points — or lose them with incorrect answers — by answering questions ranging from local geography to math equations in 50-question rounds. Each participating school hosts a meet, and the team that’s declared the overall winner is awarded a plaque.
“It’s been very, very fun, actually,” Grebetz said.
Dixon Schools plans to join the competition next year, Grebetz said, and he hopes Arlee will eventually be included, too.
