RONAN — Ronan High School Show Choir students raised about $2,000 for their upcoming tour to Denver at the annual Groundhog Day Potato Bake and silent auction, held Sunday in the Ronan Performing Arts Center.

For $6, guests filled up on tubers stuffed with chili, stroganoff or broccoli and cheese alongside salad and cake. The fundraising event has taken place for nearly a decade, according to show choir director and instructor Cathy Gillhouse.

This year, to ease the donation burden on local businesses and not take away from this Saturday’s Tomy Parker fundraising event, students provided their own auction items such as Valentine floral arrangements, home-baked goodies and handmade crafts.

The choir took center stage two times during the fundraising event and sang and danced to four numbers they’re practicing for the highlight and culmination of their class, “Cabaret,” which will be performed May 12 through 14 in Ronan.

The show choir’s tour to Denver March 30-April 5 will also provide ample performance practice for the colorful group. The road trip includes a pit stop at Twin Bridges for a school performance and a treat for residents at a care facility in Billings. While in Denver, the choir will perform at Veterans Hospital, a few residence centers, and a church.

Students will also perform outdoors at Denver’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre.

“It will give them the experience of being on stage, although there is no audience,” Gillhouse explained.

On March 1, the choir will be in concert at Polson High School with all choirs from Polson and Ronan.
