POLSON — Polson’s boys and girls tennis teams split with Corvallis Saturday, with the Pirates picking up a 4-3 win and the Lady Pirates falling to the Blue Devils 3-4.
Polson’s boys were again dominant at No. 1, 2 and 3 singles, and doubles pair Tommy Mercer and Sam Kinzle beat defending state champions Brock Fehr and Josh Vanema 6-1, 6-4. No. 1 doubles partners Harden Congdon and Layne Zimmerman fell to Shade Jessop and D.J. Pekoc, 5-7, 7-5, 10-6, in what head coach Bob Hislop called “the match of the day.”
On the girls’ side, Corvallis won three out of the four singles matches and a victory at No. 3 doubles to take the victory.
“Laramie McHugh and Whitney Zimmerman had a fabulous match at No. 1 singles,” Hislop said. “Both are top level players in the state and the quality of tennis showed that.”
Karly Rochin and Mollybeth Hendrix are still undefeated on the season and are playing excellent doubles, Hislop noted, and Shannon Oakley is also still undefeated.
When the day ended, both defending state champs — the Corvallis boys and the Polson girls — were defeated.
Polson heads to Columbia Falls Thursday before traveling to the Cut Bank Invitational this weekend.
