ST. REGIS — The Arlee Scarlets’ lockdown defense propelled them to pair of wins last weekend.

After giving up a pair of baskets early against Lincoln at home Friday, the Scarlets didn’t let the Lady Lynx make another field goal in the first half on their way to a 41-23 nonconference victory. Saturday in St. Regis, the Scarlets limited the Lady Tigers to seven first-half points and cruised to a 52-26 District 14-C victory.

After watching the Lady Lynx score easy baskets on their first couple of trips down the court, Arlee coach Richard Bachmeier was forced to call a timeout.

“I called timeout when I saw what Lincoln was running and we made some adjustments. We backed up off the top and tightened up down low and just played good, solid defense,” Bachmeier said.

The adjustments worked. After the timeout the Lady Lynx didn’t score the rest of the quarter and a free throw early in the second quarter was the only other point in the first half for them as the Scarlets took a commanding 24-5 lead into the break. After the timeout the Scarlets held the Lady Lynx to three points over the next 20 minutes.

But it wasn’t only the Scarlets’ defense that was working. Unlike last season, the more experienced Scarlets had no problem with the Lady Lynx press, cutting through the full-court pressure for easy baskets.

“We’re coming together a little bit. We’re a better ball handling team than last year. We’re getting good looks, but we’re still missing a lot of shots,” Bachmeier said. “The experience is really starting to show up. What’s happening is we’re a lot more comfortable out there. We’re not having to think about everything, it’s a lot more natural this year.”

Scarlet sophomore Mahalia Hendren led all scorers with 12 points. Hendren also pulled down 12 boards.

The Scarlets had nine different players score.

“We’re playing 13, 12 players a night and they’re all contributing. We’re able to go to our bench and give our starters some rest and we’re not seeing the third quarter drop off like we did last year,” Bachmeier said.

Freshman Whitney Malatare finished with seven points and Tayla Dejarlais and Kristyn Adams each finished with five.

In St. Regis Saturday, the Lady Tigers didn’t have an answer for Adams in the paint and the 5-foot-8 sophomore finished with 14 points.

“We just kept feeding her (Adams) the ball and let her do her work down low. They just couldn’t handle her size,” Bachmeier said.

Alexis Shick, another freshman seeing plenty of varsity minutes, finished with nine points. Hendren pitched in with eight and Malatare added five. Karleigh Bolin, Dejarlais, Nault and Eva Borbely each finished with four.

With the two victories the Scarlets improve to 2-2.
