ST. REGIS — There’s an old saying that you have to go slow to go fast. The Warriors found out what this meant Friday night.

After going into the locker room tied with the Lynx 36-36 after a frantic first half, the Warriors calmed down in the second half and pulled away from Lincoln for a 70-63 nonconference victory.

“We talked about going fast with the body, but slower with our minds,” first-year Arlee coach Dustin Keltner said. “We didn’t do anything really different, we just slowed down things mentally.”

The game really slowed down for Warrior post Trae Burland in the second half. After only scoring four points in the first half, the senior went off for 20 points in the second half.

“Trae’s a dynamic scorer. We have five different players that can lead us in scoring, and it just happened to be his night,” Keltner said. “He finished really strong. Basically, he just got into a rhythm and sometimes when you get hot the basket can get pretty big.”

Warrior guard Kasey Bridgewater connected on four 3-pointers to finish with 21 points. Two of the senior’s treys came in the final quarter, where the Warriors outscored the Lynx 20-13 to pull away from the Western C Divisional contenders. Bridgewater’s first three in the final quarter gave the Warriors a 61-56 lead with just more than five minutes to play. His final three from the corner extended the lead to 66-56 with three minutes to play.

“He’s been consistent all year on offense and defense. He really opens it up the zone. He creates a lot of opportunities for our other scorers,” Keltner said.

Thomas McClure was one of the other scorers. The 6-foot-4 senior finished with 11 points. Jesse Pfau added eight.

The Warriors trailed 24-17 after the first quarter, but knocked down three 3-pointers in the second quarter and stormed back to tie it at 36 at the break.

“It was an up and down first half, but they showed some composure and resilience and battled back,” Keltner said.

The Warriors also had a strong second quarter in St. Regis Saturday night to pick up their first conference win. After not matching the Tigers’ intensity in the first quarter, the Warriors only led 16-13 after the first quarter. The Warriors started to press St. Regis in the second quarter and outscored the undermanned Tigers 29-6 in the quarter en route to a 70-30 District 14-C victory.

Bridgewater led all scorers with 23 points. Burland finished with 10. McClure scored eight and Sam Nelsonand Pfau each had six.

After playing Two Eagle Monday and Superior Tuesday, the 3-1 Warriors will be off until Jan. 6.
